Our History
The Chinese American Physicians' Society (CAPS) was founded in 1977 by a dedicated group of Chinese American physicians in the Hayward area, led by Dr. George Wong, an obstetrician at St. Rose Hospital. Their vision was to support Chinese American medical professionals and advocate for equitable healthcare. The organization gained further momentum in the early 1980s following the tragic case of Dr. Vincent Chin, which galvanized CAPS's commitment to fighting racial discrimination and promoting social justice within and beyond the medical community.
Today, CAPS honors the legacy of its founders—including Drs. Lawrence Ng, George Wong, Rolland Wong, David Der, Leon Lee, and Thomas Fung—while continuing to grow and welcome physicians from all backgrounds. We are proud to be a corporate member of the Federation of Chinese American and Chinese Canadian Medical Societies (FCMS), reflecting our ongoing dedication to diversity, advocacy, and community service.
CAPS is committed to advancing the medical profession and promoting equality for all healthcare professionals, regardless of their background. Our main objectives are to:
Eliminate Racial Prejudice and Discrimination – We are dedicated to eradicating racial bias and discrimination in all facets of the medical profession.Foster Social Responsibility – We work to increase awareness of the medical profession’s responsibility to the communities we serve, advocating for a more inclusive and compassionate approach to healthcare.
Provide a Forum for Knowledge Sharing – CAPS offers a platform for medical professionals to exchange information, discuss challenges, and share advancements in the field to improve skills and practices.
Support Accessible Healthcare – We actively promote and support the expansion of affordable, high-quality medical services in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities.
